Aldo Leopold writings

1 The Land Ethic by Aldo Leopold 1949 [ This essay is excerpted from Aldo Leopold's book A Sand County Almanac. ] When god-like Odysseus returned from the wars in Troy, he hanged all on one rope a dozen slave-girls of his household whom he suspected of misbehavior during his absence. This hanging involved no question of propriety. The girls were property. The disposal of property was then, as now, a matter of expediency, not of right and wrong. Concepts of right and wrong were not lacking from O… Continue

Aldo Leopold-Land Ethic and "Thinking Like a Mountain"

Here in Wisconsin, Aldo Leopold, for whom the Aldo Leopold Center in BAraboo is named for, was, and still is a leader in conservation science. For my ecology class, we recently read a few excerpts of his writing, i found it to be some of the most interesting writing i have ever seen. His land ethic, i found to be comfusing until i gut used to his style of writing, His point is basically that people try to put a cash value on everything, and sometimes that is not possible. Farmers for example, wi… Continue

Hello!

Hi all, I am a junior at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. I heard about this website on Facebook. I am a biology major, with a specialization in environmental biology. I hope to one day work for the DNR or EPA or other government organization doing land conservation work or some sort of wildlife or resource management research. Mostly here i am looking to make connections for internships, jobs, etc. . . . So, lets see, a little more about me. I live in a tiny town, about a half hour north… Continue

Never was able to do much of anything with my degrees (biology & zoology) because of my ethics kept getting in the way. It is too late for me now anyway. But, now I can do what I love best ... manage (return acres to the control of natural forces) some acres of the natural landscape and share with others.

If you are interested in returning acres let me know. There is much more to it than it may first appear.

Most biologist end up working for people and not the natural landscape. Ask yourself the question over and over again "is what I'm doing helping the natural world or is it helping people" (i.e. building nature centers and trails for people, forestry, agriculture, etc).

Hope you can be of some value to the natural world. Good luck.
